Staas Clouds Using the Open Cloud Forensics Model

چکیده
The rapid adoption of cloud computing to meet storage and computation needs has changed the way computing services and resources are used. However, because of the black-box nature and multi-tenant usage models of clouds, existing digital forensics science cannot cope with current state-of-the-art cloud architectures. Because of the fundamental characteristics of such clouds, many assumptions of digital forensics are invalidated. In the digital forensics process involving clouds, the role of cloud service providers (CSPs) is extremely important; a role which needs to be considered in the science of cloud forensics. In this paper, we define cloud forensics while considering the role of the CSP and propose the Open Cloud Forensics (OCF) model. The OCF model focuses on preserving sufficient electronically stored information (ESI) required to investigate cases involving clouds and ensuring the trustworthiness of such ESI. Based on this we propose two cloud architectures: the OCF-supported Infrastructure-asa-Service (IaaS) cloud and the OCF-supported Storage-as-a-Service (StaaS) cloud. We validate our proposed models using a case study, which is inspired from an actual civil lawsuit.

The storage as a service (StaaS) cloud computing architecture is showing significant growth as users adopt the capability to store data in the cloud environment across a range of devices. Cloud (storage) forensics has recently emerged as a salient area of inquiry. Using a widely used open source cloud StaaS application – ownCloud – as a case study, we document a series of digital forensic exper...

STorage as a Service (STaaS) cloud platforms benefits such as getting access to data anywhere, anytime, on a wide range of devices made them very popular among businesses and individuals. As such forensics investigators are increasingly facing cases that involve investigation of STaaS platforms. Therefore, it is essential for cyber investigators to know how to collect, preserve, and analyse evi...

The rapid migration from traditional computing and storage model to the cloud model creates the necessity of supporting reliable forensics in the cloud. However, today’s cloud computing architectures often lack support for forensic investigations because many of the assumptions that are taken for granted in traditional digital forensics do not apply to clouds. Hence, the existing digital forens...

Today’s cloud computing architectures often lack support for computer forensic investigations. Besides this, the existing digital forensics tools cannot cope with the dynamic nature of the cloud. This paper explores the challenges of digital forensics in the cloud, possible attacks on cloud-evidence, and mitigation strategies against those challenges. Digital Forensics in the Cloud To identify ...

Introduction: Patterns of spatial and temporal rainfall impact on runoff and outlet hydrograph (Cordery, 1993; James, 1994). Results of different studies have clarified that simulation by using diverse rainfall data could increase the reliance of results. These were much more sensible in which areas encounter with data scarcity (Mello et al., 2008; Bekiaris et al., 2008). Rainfall properties in...
